Seminar on Pathways to Rehabilitation and Sustainable Deradicalization

Thursday, September 3, 2026

Department of Psychology, University of Wah, organized an International Hybrid Seminar titled “The Path to Rehabilitation: Global Models for Sustainable Deradicalization and Reintegration” on 03 September 2026. The seminar brought together national and international experts to examine evidence-based approaches to deradicalization, rehabilitation, and sustainable reintegration.

The international session included Dr. Denis Ajieh Mekolle from Sigmund Freud University in Vienna, Austria, who talked about how people become radicalized and shared global methods for rehabilitation, deradicalization, and reintegration, highlighting the need for interventions based on evidence and supportive systems.

The national session featured Dr. Iram Gul, Associate Professor, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, who spoke on “Psychological Assessment for Sustainable Reintegration”; Dr. Awais Bin Wasi, Associate Professor, who presented “The Paradox of Radicalization: From Binary to Plurality”; Dr. Syed Tahir Hussain Shah, who discussed “Economic Reintegration: Employment, Livelihoods, and Reducing Recidivism”; Dr. Muhammad Amjid, who addressed “Prison-Based Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration: Promoting Healing and Resilience”; Ms. Rizwana Samreen, who presented “Narrative & Counter-Narrative Approaches in Reducing Radicalization: A Psychological Perspective”; and Dr. Jamil Ahmed Sheikh, who discussed “Community Reintegration and Social Support: Rebuilding Social Cohesion after Extremism.”

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rizwan, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, served as the Chief Organizer, supported by Dr. Noman Aftab, Chairperson, Department of Psychology, and Ms. Haleema Adnan, Lecturer, as organizers and focal persons for the seminar, respectively. The event provided an interdisciplinary platform for scholars, practitioners, and students to engage with diverse psychological, social, economic, educational, community-based, and correctional approaches to sustainable rehabilitation and reintegration.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rizwan emphasized the importance of collaborative academic initiatives in developing sustainable pathways from radicalization to rehabilitation and reintegration. Certificates of appreciation were presented to the keynote speakers, organizers, volunteers, and participants in recognition of their valuable contributions to the seminar.
