The Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC), University of Wah, organized a distinguished lecture on “AI’s Philosophical Challenges” under its Distinguished Lecture Series on 04 June 2026. The event brought together faculty members, researchers, and students to explore the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its implications for society.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy, who discussed how AI is transforming decision-making, education, healthcare, communication, and research while raising important questions about consciousness, ethics, privacy, creativity, and human identity.
Prof. Hoodbhoy highlighted three major philosophical challenges associated with AI: bias in data, which can lead to unfair outcomes; machine consciousness and sentience, which raise the question of whether AI can ever achieve genuine awareness; and the problem of values, which concerns the embedding of ethical principles into AI systems. He emphasized that although AI offers significant opportunities, it also presents challenges related to human autonomy, critical thinking, misinformation, and ethical responsibility.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Shumaila Naz, Focal Person of the Distinguished Lecture Series, thanked Prof. Hoodbhoy for his insightful presentation and highlighted the importance of understanding both the opportunities and philosophical implications of AI in academia and research.
The lecture concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where participants discussed AI ethics, human consciousness, academic integrity, misinformation, and the future relationship between humans and intelligent machines. The event provided a valuable platform for intellectual engagement and critical reflection on the role of AI in shaping the future.
