In line with its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), the University of Wah, through its Department of Chemistry, organized an online webinar titled “Green Chemistry for Climate Change Mitigation.” The session was conducted via Google Meet and featured Dr. Hizba Waheed, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, as the speaker.
The webinar brought together students, faculty members, and researchers, providing a platform to explore the role of green chemistry in addressing climate change. In her presentation, Dr. Waheed outlined the fundamental concepts of green chemistry and emphasized its importance in reducing environmental hazards through sustainable chemical design and processes.
She further elaborated on the twelve principles of green chemistry, highlighting key aspects such as waste prevention, safer synthesis, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable feedstocks. The session also incorporated real-world case studies to demonstrate the environmental and societal impact of chemical practices, reinforcing the need for adopting greener alternatives in both academia and industry.
In addition, participants were introduced to important evaluation tools, including atom economy, environmental (E) factor, and reaction mass efficiency, along with the R₄M₄ sustainability model. These frameworks provided practical insights into measuring and improving the environmental performance of chemical processes.
The webinar concluded with an interactive discussion session, followed by remarks acknowledging Dr. Hizba Waheed for her comprehensive and engaging presentation. The Department also expressed appreciation for the continued support of the university administration, the efforts of the organizing team, and the active participation of attendees.
