Read Pakistan-UW organized the National Literature Celebration titled "Jashn-e-Shaer-o-Bayan" to promote literature and strengthen reading culture among students and the wider community on 04 June 2026.
The event brought together students, faculty members, and literary enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. The distinguished guests included Syeda Fatima Hasan Gilani, Chief Guest and CEO of Read Pakistan, and Ms. Yasmeen Akhtar, Guest of Honour, renowned book translator and editor.
The program commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a welcome address and an inspiring keynote speech by the Chief Guest. Sharing her personal journey as a reader, Ms. Gilani emphasized the transformative power of books in developing empathy, critical thinking, focus, and resilience, particularly in an era characterized by constant digital distractions.
A major highlight of the celebration was a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Reading in this Age of Distraction.” The panel featured distinguished speakers, including Dr. Syed Raza Abbas, Dr. Majid Jamal Khan, Ruqays Kamzi, and Rubab Kazmi. The panelists explored the challenges faced by young readers in maintaining concentration and cultivating meaningful reading habits in the digital age. They also discussed the influence of social media and digital technologies on reading practices. They shared practical strategies for rebuilding focus, encouraging critical thinking, and fostering a lifelong engagement with books.
The event also featured a cake-cutting ceremony and a series of literary and creative competitions designed to encourage student participation and expression. These activities included original poetry writing, a book-themed treasure hunt, cultural literature presentations, digital bookmark design, and poetry recitation. The celebration concluded with an award distribution ceremony, where shields and certificates were presented to winners and runners-up in recognition of their outstanding performances.
