UW FM 101.8 radio aired exclusive podcasts featuring Mr. Muhammad Dawood Khan, a renowned environmental journalist with a wealth of experience, currently in the UK for international climate conferences, and Dr. Maryam Shabbir Abbasi, also an environmental expert based in the US and a visiting Senior Research Associate with the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in Islamabad on 04 and 10 July 2024. In a discussion with the Station Manager, UW FM 101.8, Mr. Umar Hayat Khan and Muhammad Dawood Khan, he emphasized how human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, contribute to global warming by increasing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. This warming leads to extreme weather, rising sea levels, and disrupted ecosystems. Specifically, in Pakistan, climate change results in frequent floods, heat waves, and melting glaciers, severely impacting agriculture and water resources. Mr. Khan highlighted the importance of global cooperation and local efforts, including adopting renewable energy, reducing waste, and implementing sustainable practices. He also pointed out Pakistan's initiatives like tree-planting campaigns and resilient infrastructure development. Complementing Khan's insights, Dr Maryam Shabbir Abbasi elaborated on global and local mitigation strategies. These include reducing emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting conservation, and developing technological innovations. Both experts stressed that addressing climate change in Pakistan requires a multifaceted approach involving government, communities, businesses, and international partners to build resilience and ensure sustainable development. This discussion emphasizes the vital role of collective efforts at all levels, stressing that each individual's actions are crucial in the battle against climate change.
