University of Wah conducted a Media Literacy Training session on 21 March 2025, in compliance with Higher Education Commission (HEC) directives. This initiative followed the National Assembly’s resolution on 22 October 2024 emphasizing the need to equip students, faculty, and administration with essential media literacy skills to counter misinformation and fake news.
Prof. Dr. Wazir Zada Khan, Dean, Faculty of Computer Science and resource person for the session, educated participants on the rapid shift to digital media, the rise of misinformation, and the importance of critical thinking skills. Key discussions covered the legal framework in Pakistan, including the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, the Pakistan Penal Code, and PEMRA regulations. Participants also learned fact-checking methods, AI-based detection tools, and the role of social media in curbing misinformation.
Prof. Dr. Wazir Zada Khan highlighted the importance of responsible media consumption, urging individuals to verify information before sharing. He emphasized that educational institutions must play a key role in fostering awareness and digital responsibility among students and faculty.
This session marked a significant step towards aligning with HEC’s vision of equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills required to navigate the digital information landscape responsibly. The compliance report of this activity has been submitted to HEC as per directives.
