Department of Biosciences, University of Wah, to promote sustainable practices aligned with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster scientific knowledge among students, organized an event, Biofesta 2024, on 11 December 2024. Students and faculty members from University of Wah and other institutions, including Base College of Science and Commerce, Wah Cantt; Riphah International College Wah Cantt Campus; and The Scholar Science College, Wah Cantt Campus, enthusiastically participated in the event. Various engaging activities and competitions, including a science model/project competition and the establishment of interactive stalls such as an herbal corner, a medical camp, a mental health corner, and a game corner, were held to promote holistic health education, preventive care, and recreational engagement alongside scientific learning. The model/project competition displayed innovative student projects centered on environmental conservation and sustainable practices. Participants presented diverse models on themes such as recycling, integrated farming, hydroponics, and aquaponics, all aligning with varied United Nations SDGs. Notable highlights included SDG 2: Zero Hunger, which featured models emphasizing sustainable food production. SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation promoted efficient water use, while SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy showcased solar, wind, and biofuels. Additionally, recycling models supported SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production; integrated farming addressed SDG 13: Climate Action; and aquaponics focused on SDG 14: Life Below Water.
Prof. Dr. Waqas Hassan, Professor, Biosciences Department-UW was the chief guest, and Prof. Dr. Shumaila Naz, Chairperson, Department of Biosciences, was the resource person for the event. Prof. Dr. Waqas praised the participants for their efforts and highlighted the importance of such initiatives in nurturing a culture of scientific exploration. The models were assessed on factors such as scientific explanation, innovation, accuracy, presentation skills, and real-world applicability. Prizes were awarded to the top three projects, recognizing the exceptional talent and dedication of the participants.
